Day 1 of 2010

I spent a nice quiet morning with the pups. We were all thinking about what would be in my best interest for 2010. RP, Stan and Zippy helped me decide on four goals for this year.

1. Keep my portions of food between 1/2 and 1 cup because they noticed I was piling stuff way too high on my plate and that can't be good for me. If I get too big, I can't comfortably play with them or help out with their Dad who has a cranky knee and hip.
2. Exercise five days a week, because when I do, I am more relaxed and less likely to bark at their Dad.
3. Knit only from the yarn in my stash because they have concluded that I have plenty of choices for a variety of projects. And really, because enough is enough.
4. Complete St.Brigid, my forever sweater, because they can't wait to cuddle up in my lap when I am wearing it.

I'm looking forward to taking my AAPC online courses in medical coding, medical terminology and anatomy which will hopefully lead to future employment.

And most of all, I look forward to enjoying the company of my family, friends and critters.

A few weeks in Nov 09

Its hard to believe its almost Thanksgiving,. Its been a warm, rainy Autumn in Blue Bell. Many of us have been battling the viral bugs and upper respiratory infection that crop up this time of year. I'm hoping to return to the gym soon. My lungs are still a bit irritated from being ill. I definitely need to get back on track with my eating and exercise.

The past few weeks I've been busy knitting baby items, started a fair isle hat, am making progress on Rachel's afghan and hope to get back to St. Brigid soon.

I'm happily helping out with the twins, Robert and Caitlyn. They are now 5 months old and growing beautifully. My other two munchkins Celia and James are doing fine too.

Rachel will be spending this holiday season with Adam and his family. She enjoys them very much and feels very welcome.

Deb and Bill are trying to sell their townhouse and make a move into a bigger home. Its a slow frustrating process for them, especially with the economic crazies.

In my spare time I dream about owning an alpaca farm. Without dreams we are lost.

October 09 Update

Since my trip to Rhinebeck, Rachel and some of my friends and their children have been dealing with upper respiratory ick. Fortunately not swine flu, but there is plenty of that around. Several nursery schools and day care centers have been closed.

Since my last post, Celia celebrated her 1st birthday, Robert and Caitlyn are now 4 months old, both growing beautifully and young James is seriously being 2! I love them all and are so happy to be involved in their lives.

Rachel is gearing up for her Italian luncheon at school this week. She spent Halloween here and we had some good laughs. I am not fond of this holiday because I find the older children to be rude and greedy. I wonder if there is any parenting going on these days.

I'm working on my baby knitting, making slow progress on St.Brigid and also enjoyed shopping for alpaca yarn courtesy of my friend, Deb. She has 6 alpaca and had their fleece recently processed for the first time. I purchased some tri-color 3 ply, light worsted weight alpaca and some alpaca/merino/bamboo roving for a friend to spin.

Rhinebeck 2009

I travelled to Rhinebeck with Jen for the very first time this weekend. We had a fabulous trip. The festival is very large but very well run. People are friendly and polite and the vendors all offered beautiful yarns and fibers. Rug hooking is also gaining in popularity. The weather was cold and rainy, but it did not dampen our enjoyment. Here are photos of my new stash. All my choices were handspun wools and one alpaca/bombyx silk blend. The kangaroo was a surprise too.

20 Years Old

Rachel is now 20 years old. On Oct 1, 1989, after 32 hours of labor and 2 hours of pushing she arrived at 8:27PM. She was asleep and purring. The years have been filled with love, like, fun, happiness and awe. Rachel has amazed us and continues to do so every day. Here are a few photos through the years. Deb, her sister is 15 years older. The girls are close and I am so thankful for that. One with Grandpa Morris in NJ, with Kishka, our black standard poodle, who was a puppy in this photo taken in California and of course one with RP taken Oct 1.

Summer comes to an end

Summer is coming to an end. I am ready. The past few months have been lazy and relaxed. Rachel was busy with school, coming home most weekends to unwind, play with the pups and of course, putter. Adam visited also and then the two of them headed to NC for a much needed break.

I happily spent time with all the new babies in my life, while watching their new moms figure it all out. They are all doing a fantastic job raising wonderful children. I adore them all and am so thrilled to be part of it.

I look forward each week to meeting with my knitting friends. We are an eclectic group who have interesting conversations and laugh... sometimes, well most of the time, uncontrollably! We could write a book.

I'm finishing knitting projects, have a few more promised baby items to knit and am tackling Alice Starmore's "St. Brigid." Also, getting the bug to knit a complicated Fair Isle...but have not decided which one.

During the upcoming months, I plan to take a few more online courses and decide whether or not I will pursue a medical coding certification.

We are also starting to think about our future. What to do with the current house, where to go, are alpacas in my future? Much to think about, much uncertainty and many what ifs?

Pups are fine. Do you think they would like alpacas?

As the weeks go by

Is summer over yet? I am ready for cooler temperatures. The weeks go by, but feel very unsettled. And at times I've been kind of cranky and not in the mood for much.
My laptop recently went kaput. We bought a new Toshiba. After a few days, it was obvious the gizmo was not configured properly, so we returned it. I am getting used to my new Sony. One of these days I would love a MAC, but its not currently in the budget. In addition to that expense, Rachel and I also needed new cell phones.

The weather has been hot and stormy. My container plants have been happy and I do miss my big garden. Tomatoes and cukes are starting to come in. My basil, parsley and oregano are plentiful.

My weekly knitting groups keep me sane. I am finishing the baby items I've been working on. All of the babies are doing fine. I especially enjoy being the traveling granny. It really is such a treat.

Going to the gym has become part of my daily routine. This surprisingly has been easy for me. But, I need to get back on the wagon with my eating habits. I think my food issues are part of why I become cranky and unsettled. Funny thing how I know this, but lose the motivation to keep myself accountable and behaving responsibly.

I plan to start a Medical Terminology online course in a few weeks. That will keep me busy and feeling productive. I'm continuing to monitor the medical coding and billing field to see how health care reforms will affect my future career plans.

Rachel has been coming home on the weekends. We putter, sometimes cook and today was especially fun...she started knitting again. I hope Rachel continues. She is a very good knitter.

The pups are fine. Feisty as ever. I bought them a wading pool and they are not too sure about it. I have three eccentric, comical, goofy critters.

I am bored with summer and ready for the comfortable fall weather and winter knitting. Here are a few pics of what we have been up to.

Another week goes by

The past week has been a blur. We celebrated Marvin's 63rd birthday with our traditional choo choo train cake. However, this year he requested chocolate cake with red icing...usually its white icing. Fortunately we did not have a train wreck! Very tasty cake which I have eaten way too much of this week.

Rachel and I spent time doing what we do best... PUTTERING. It seems to be genetic. Rachel's haunts are Target and Bed Bath and Beyond. Deb loves the outlets and my spots are Borders, B&N and the yarn shop. And of course we always end our day with a meal at Pumpernicks, our local deli. We also squeezed in a pedicure.

Then, my week kind of fell apart and I developed a never ending sinus headache. After a visit to the doctor, I am now on antibiotic for sinusitis...bleeeeechh. My back ache is almost gone. Not much gym activity either :(

My coding studies are going well. I have three more lessons and then I take the final. Next will probably be medical terminology.

Not much knitting action. Hopefully I'll get my mojo back and finish up some projects before the fall yarns appear.

July 4, 2009 weekend

The children and pets ruled the roost for a few days this weekend. Deb and Bill, their dog Ladybug and Rachel spent most of the weekend at home. We relaxed, laughed a great deal, ate lasagna and talked about future dreams and desires. A great weekend.

Life is Good

My dad is now 79 years young! We spent a fun day with my family celebrating, reminiscing, laughing, being silly and goofy.

The past few weeks have been busy for me. My medical coding class is very interesting. There is so much to learn. I can see where it is a very critical cog in the health care wheel. I am looking forward to the next few weeks to see if coding is a good match for me to pursue.

Rachel, I am proud to say, has maintained her 4.0 at Drexel and just started her summer quarter. Deb, Bill and Ladybug will be here for part of July 4 weekend. It will be fun to catch up with them.

My sweet, knitting friend, April, gave birth to her preemie twins last week. I was able to spend a scrumptious morning at the NICU cuddling with the babies. Robert is now home and Caitlyn will follow as soon as her weight increases.

My knitting has been a bit scattered. I am working on various baby items using stash yarns since they require small quantities. I certainly have plenty of little ones to knit for.

Pups are fine and the Marvelous One continues to keep busy.

A New Start

My mind is in good shape! My medical coding class started today. Its going to be demanding and fun. Medical mumbo jumbo has always fascinated me. This should keep me hopping and also teach me a great deal about what goes on behind the scenes between the medical profession and insurance companies. Navigating through this mysterious labyrinth will become very useful as the country's health care system changes and we get older and head toward Medicareville

I renewed my commitment to the Weight Watchers Online Program. My exercise routine is well established, but the past few months I have been less conscientious about my eating. I refuse to let all my hard work unravel like a slippery skein of rayon yarn.

Knitting as always...mostly for the little ones that have arrived and will be here soon.

Back to the books ...53 and a student again :)

Taking a Leap

Guess what I did this morning? I enrolled in a 6 week online course through our community college so I could get an overview of medical coding. If I like it, the goal is to become certified through formal course work here: http://www.aapc.com/

I need to do something, but want control over what, where and when. This has been on my mind for a while, so I finally decided to jump. My sister does medical transcription and is also interested in coding, but says its a huge responsibility...especially if errors are made. Also, with health care heading for major changes, now may be a good time to get my feet wet. This may also open up other areas of interest. Classes start June 17. There are two lessons a week. So, I shall see how well my brain functions! Its administrative work and may be tedious, but its something that I could potentially do at home, on my terms. I have a general knowledge of medical terminology and with our professional life being so wrapped up in the pharmaceutical world, this could become an interesting extension of that.

I've been idle since Oct 21, 2008. The time off was for a good reason - surgery, recovery etc., but, enough. I don't want my brain to shrivel up and would feel much better about being able to contribute to my family again.

The past few months I've been focusing on learning to live a healthier lifestyle. While I am not always perfect, I have come a long way. My life is rich. I have a wonderful family, beautiful friendships, knitting buddies and adorable pups.

Plodding along

The past couple weeks have just gone by without much hoopla. I've been enjoying time with my friends at my various knitting groups and slowly working on my projects. I have a sock in the works, finished a scarf for Rachel and went through my projects, frogging a few UFO'S that I completely lost interest in.

I also love to spend tie with Caroline and Celia. The baby will be 7 months old.

Rachel and I planted annuals in all the front beds and I planted herbs and tomatoes in containers on the deck. Now that I have time I miss my big backyard garden, but the pups would get into too much mischief so containers will do.

I'm stalled with my weight loss because I am weary from focusing so much on it. I am continuing to go to the gym regularly and do enjoy that.

Think I will get on with my day. I also have no idea how to post photos so they mesh with my writing, but I guess you can figure it out!

Mother's Day 2009

I had a simply wonderful Mother's Day. It started off with a quiet morning cup of coffee among sleepy pups, a trip to the gym and a quick stop at Yarnings for some sock dpns. I came home to a beautiful bouquet of flowers and lunch at Pumpernicks
I had a double deli weekend, ate lots of yummy food and didn't feel one bit of guilt. After lunch, we came home and played with the fur babies outside in the glorious sunshine.

A day with Grandma and Grandpa

Rachel and I just got home from spending the day with my mom and dad. Grandpa mailed her a recipe for apple strudel, said it was his favorite and worth $100. Well, Rachel made it for him as a surprise, not expecting to receive any money and it was delicious. Dad slipped her $100 as we were leaving. It was a fun day.

The first weekend in May is the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival held at the Howard County Fairgrounds in West Friendship, MD. I drove down with three of my knitting friends - April, Anya and Jen. The day started off with a light rain, but became a pleasant day, not too warm and slightly overcast. We wandered through the fair at a relaxed pace,taking in all the sights and sounds. The animals were precious to watch. Each of us made a few purchases, but no one blew their budget. It was fun seeing some the well known knitting patterns being worn. Many "February Lady Sweaters, Central Park Hoodies, Rustic Root, a variety of gorgeous shawls. Socks That Rock seemed to draw oodles of people. I gravitated toward the natural handspun and purchased some Icelandic lace weight lambswool in a very dark espresso, handspun worsted wool in a midnight blue/black and bought a skein of superwash sock yarn in a pretty driftwood color. Now to spend some time wondering what to knit. All in all a very good day.

Chocolate Raspberry

I spent a busy week going to the gym, running errands, visiting and knitting with friends. The pups were groomed and came home squeaky clean and adorable. Marvin spent a few days in VA, Rachel and Adam were in the city. I finished Nadine's baby blanket, have a Manos scarf in the works for Rachel and started a Juniper Bonnet using some Dale Baby Yarn. Easter Celebration 2009

We had a wonderful day celebrating the Easter holiday with Dr. Fuller's family. Adam also joined us. Rachel outdid herself in the dessert preparation department. There was cheesecake, raspberry sorbet, lemon squares, key lime pie,red velvet chocolate decadent flourless chocolate cake, rice krispie treat 3D bunny and cornbread. Photos are posted. Dr. Fuller is the happy fellow and Grandma Fuller is with Rachel.

I will need a week to detox from all this delicious food. When the kids left to return to Philly, I sent them home with all the left overs...just too tempting.

Fun Day in Philly

Yesterday I took the train into Philly to spend the day with Rachel. She needed pasty supplies so we met at Market Street East and walked into the heart of the Italian Market where her favorite cooking supply place, Fantes is located. We spent some time collecting the various spatulas, pastry brushes etc. She gets so excited in that place. Next we went to lunch at small eatery and had delicious grilled vegetable sandwhiches. Onward towards toward Loop on South St where Rachel spotted some pretty lavender jojoland cobweb merino lace and then a few blocks away at 2107 Locust St to Rosie's Yarn Cellar where she picked out some variegated Manos in reds, golds, blues and purples. The game plan is a simple rectangular shawl, the pattern yet to be determined and a winter accessory. We then continued to her apartment. We walked a good 5-6 miles yesterday and by the time we drove back to Blue Bell, my right leg was feeling the effects of our day. But, it felt great. Rachel spent the night, the pups were thrilled as was Marvin. They wanted the UNC-Villanova game. Today the plan is a realxing lunch with her dad at Minados a Japanese house and then maybe pedicures.

Today was wonderful. My children were all home, pups were thrilled. We relaxed, caught up on life and watched basketball and bowling. Nothing gives me more joy then having my loved ones close enough to hug.

Quiet Monday

The weather has been nice, but still cool for Spring. Rachel and Adam spent part of this past weekend in Blue Bell before driving back to NC for break. The pups were thrilled as you can see in the photos.

Marvin and I went to dinner with some friends. We enjoyed a delicious meal at an Italian style restaurant somewhere in Morrisville, PA. Definitely worth the thirty mile drive and worth going to again.

I'm trying to finish up baby blankets before the little ones arrive, have one more visit to PT and then an at home plan in addition to the gym to keep me fit and strong.

Today was beautiful. Sunny, blue skies and just the right temperature. I attempted to sit on the deck with a cup of coffee and knit, but the pups were having too much fun for me to not take some photos. So no knitting content to report. How about a budding maple tree and a few action pup photos.

54 Years

Today we spent the afternoon celebrating my parents 54Th wedding anniversary. We had a small gathering with mom and dad, my sister's family and my cousins. We had a delicious, late lunch here: http://www.bellanapolibloomfield.com/

Mom and Dad are fun and still adore one another very much. Its hard to believe mom gave birth to me when she was 19.

Now we are home, relaxing and watching TV. The pups surprisingly did not eat the couch while we were gone and were happy to see us when we returned.

Friday Update

This week I was completely out of wack due to the time change. I can't really remember what I did, except for the usual trips to PT, the gym and my knitting groups., But despite my inability to recall the week, I did finish Celia's First Noro Sweater and started a Baby Dragon Scarf with some Noro Aurora. The photos are below. And of course here is one of RP so if Rachel takes a peek here, she can see how cute he is.

Lazy Sunday

Well, let's see. Not much went on today. The pups didn't budge until almost 9AM, which meant we had a lazy start to the day. Moving the clocks ahead will have us all out of wack for a few days. I puttered around, went to the gym and then grocery shopped. After putting groceries away, I tossed a turkey breast in the oven and sat on the deck to knit. Dinner was tasty and after cleaning up, boredom set in. I took a ride back to the supermarket to pick up the Bartlett pears the packer forgot to put in my bag and strolled through B&N bookstore. Exciting, eh?

I need to start taking pics of other things aside from the pups and my knitting. My excuse is that I'm still learning to use my camera. Once the weather improves, I'll have more interesting photos to share.

Haywire

Today was quite warm, but cloudy. I went to the gym and scooted to Yarnings to see if they carried Fiber Trends Naturally Stella Bamboo, but no luck. I did find a skein of Elsbeth Lavold Silky Wool for $4. Its Deb's favorite color, so I decided to buy it instead of a $4 latte. No definite plans for this yarn, but its enough for a simple lace scarf.

I'm not quite sure why I am so haywire, but I am. I feel stronger and more toned as a result of going to the gym and PT. My clothes do not feel any tighter..if anything, my pants are bigger and roomier, but my mid section feels full. My body weight is shifting...almost feel like I have a Michelin tire around my waist. Not good. Have to figure out how to work this off. Me and WW are not in sync.

When I arrived home, I discovered RP, Stan, Zip and Marvin on the deck enjoying the day. Here are some photos of my gang in action.

Fun Friday

Today was relaxing and fun. My Friday morning Borders knitting group met and as usual we had a great time. I worked on Rachel's striped garter stitch afghan and the two Noro cardigan fronts. Our conversations are lively, passionate and interesting, so mindless knitting is a must.

Tonight,I started a baby hat from the "Minnies" book by Jil Eaton. The pattern is called, "Genghis baby" and is a top down hat started with i-cord. After about an inch of I-cord, I increase in each stitch, then divide the total number of stitches onto four needles, continue increasing each round until I have the required number of stitches and work even. Its really cute. I'm using Gedifra Donatello from my stash in a bright apple green.

Rachel arrived safely in NC this morning. She and Adam, Deb and Bill are attending a wedding tonight and then will relax the remainder of the weekend.

Zip is all wound up and has been playing fetch all night. My arm is tired. Here are some pics of the hat and of you know who.

Busy Thursday

Today was a busy day. We were up very early so Marvin could participate in a conference call from India. I ran errands, picked up pet supplies, people supplies, continued with my cleaning. I tackled the master bedroom and Rachel's closet. I still have to resurrect the beanie baby wall, but needed a break from that. My body is really tired and my hands are sore and dry.

The pups were in and out all day in the yard. They are exhausted and buried on the couch.

Here's an update on a few knitting projects. Rachel wanted me to work stripes for her afghan/throw. Its coming out nicely and is an easy knit. Celia's Noro cardigan fronts are almost done. I don't mind the stripes not matching. Noro is wild, colorful and makes no sense, so I'm going with that motto. I also discovered a bunch of Dale Baby Ull to use when cleaning Rachel's room ,and other stash yarn that might work well together. I have no clue for what.

I am tired. Think I'll go knit and head to bed early.

Beanie Babies and Furbies

I decided it was time to do a deep cleaning in Rachel's room. I've dusted, vacuumed and have been busy gathering all the Beanie Babies and assorted stuffed animals so I could freshen them up in the dryer. OY...what a consuming job this has been. While doing this I was scolded by a Purple Furbie. This little thing made me jump. Zippy also freaked. I also discovered a Lopi sweater in the closet I had finished up a few years ago, but never blocked, so I did that this afternoon. Next, I have to put all the beanie babies back!! Tomorrow...

The mail also bought me a book I had ordered back in December called "Ethnic Knitting Exploration" by Donna Druchunas. I have several of her other books. Donna's website is www.sheeptoshawl.com

A Good Weekend

Is it really March 1? We are waiting for a massive snowstorm...so far nothing is happening.

The weekend was fun. Rachel spent it here at home. We had a great time on Saturday. First we went to the gym, did a little shopping for spatulas, had lunch at Pumpernicks and I was able to refrain from ordering their delicious carrot cake. Next, we splurged on pedicures and then came home to relax with Marvin and the pups. Today, Rachel went with Marvin for sushi and then drove back to Philly for a school meeting.

I love when Rachel comes home. We all have a good time and the pups are always thrilled to have her to play and cuddle with.. I really like my daughter and enjoy her company. I sometimes can't believe she is mine... I have to pinch myself.

Well, I think I'll look out the window to check for snow and then go to sleep.

Glad its Friday

I'm glad its Friday because.... Rachel is coming to spend the weekend after she finishes coaching her little munchkins at the rink. She is a fabulous coach and the little ones love her.

This week seemed hectic and I feel a bit off this week with my eating habits...not good. Need to get back on track.

Her are a couple of pics. The green felted bowl was actually something called a "cupcake hat" that no one would ever wear, so I felted it and will use it hold tchotkes. The little purple, flappy thingy I crocheted a while ago and use it to protect my spiffy, digital camera. And of course what is a blog post without a puppy pick..Zippy

The comcast serviceman is her. Verizon is so expensive, we decided to switch all our services to Comcast. They are not thrilling either. I couldn't tell you what he's doing...its all Greek to me. Once he leaves, I'm going to the gym and off to Borders for my Friday knitting group.

I am so happy!! RP Doodle was a good boy at the groomer. He didn't need to be sedated and came home looking very much like a poodle!! I'll post some before and after photos.

Last night while listening to President Obama, I started knitting a cardigan for Celia in Noro Kureyon. The colorway is bold, bright and fun. The pattern called, "Seedling," is from the "Minnies" book by Jil Eaton.

This week has been hectic, but productive and unfortunately expensive...grooming fees, pet meds and supplies, cars being serviced and the second remote garage door gizmo is being replaced.

Its about time to feed the pups. Off I go.

Today started at 5:30AM so I could get myself, Stan and Zip out the door for an early grooming appointment. Then, I came home, made some cement soup, did laundry, folded clothes, went to PT, picked the pups up, fed them and then we dropped my car off for service. Geeeeeshhh..too much running around. If there was a plate of mashed taters in front of me, my head would go plop. Here are a few photos of two out of three squeaky clean, trimmed and exhausted pups. RP goes on Wed am.

Taking it easy on Saturday

Today was a low key day. The weather was nice. Cool, but sunny. I went to the gym this morning, ran a few errands, played on the computer and am now updating some photos. Here are a few from today: RP wondering if Mom finally brought us a sheep. Its actually a backpack I bought Rachel many years ago at STITCHES. Stan, basking in the sun..boy does he need a bath! RP having a bad hair day. The pups are scheduled for grooming this week. Here is the start of Rachel's afghan and a crib/stroller blanket in progress for my former co-worker's baby due in April.

Simple Pleasures

The world is in an upheaval, but what matters most to me and what keeps me grounded, joyful and content are my family and my friends, near and far. No crummy economy can take that away from me. There is no dollar value that can be assessed for my happiness and I certainly do not need a bail out! I truly have all I need.

Yesterday I spent a peaceful afternoon at the kitchen tablet with Celia and her mom. We knit:) and talked. I came home and read messages and blogs from my dear friends. Simple pleasures. Its the best feeling.

I also took a look at my knitting room yesterday, which is actually the sitting room off the master bedroom. I snapped a few pictures and then it hit me that I really have ENOUGH to keep me happily occupied for about six life times. Marvin built me the yarn cabinets. My knitting library has accumulated over twenty years of marriage. Life is good.

A visit with Mom and Dad

Today my mom and dad came to visit. We picked up food from the deli for lunch and spent a few hours talking and catching up. Mom and Dad will be married 54 years on February 27. Quiet Day

Its very quiet this morning. Pups are snoozing, Rachel is still sleeping and Marvin, being a good daddy, took her car in for service. Today we hope to visit Celia, run errands at the mall and hopefully bathe the maniacs. My mom and dad will be visiting tomorrow, so the pups need to be squeaky clean. Notice they come before the house!

I'm amazed its already February. Eastern PA has had some very cold temperatures but not much snow. I'm secretly hoping for a whopper storm, but only if everyone is safe, sound,warm and has plenty of food.

Winter brings my knitting mojo back. I've been focusing on baby garments and blankets, mittens, have two sweaters going and my TKGA swatches are slowly getting done. I also meet with several knitting friends on Friday mornings at the local Borders.

I'm still continuing with physical therapy twice a week, go the gym at least three other days and am continuing with my Weight Watchers plan.

Pups are fine. Rachel and Adam spent a few days here which made the three maniacs quite happy.

Marvin is busy with his consulting practice. Fortunately he isn't traveling much anymore.

Not much else, having fun with Ravelry and Facebook. Here are few photos. RP is quite content when he is with Rachel and Adam, Zip and Stan are inseparable and this a 5 hr baby sweater that took me 48 hrs to finish in Rowan All Seasons Cotton.

I'm not very good at this blogging thing. I've been busy keeping up with Ravelry.com and most recently joined FaceBook. I admit I get too carried away on the computer as I learn new things.

Back in Oct I had surgery to remove a varicose vein in my leg and then promptly wacked out my sacro iliac area. My recovery was longer then I expected, frustrating and annoying. During my down time, I thought things over and decided to leave my part time retail job. I enjoyed it, miss the people, but it was not as much fun anymore. The economic downturn was affecting everyone...customers and employees. I did not want to feel all the negative energy. People just need to slow down and regain their bearings.

I've been knitting more, enrolled in the TKGA Master Knitter series, am following Weight Watchers and joined a local Gym. I admit I am being selfish, but I just want to simplify and have a less complicated life so I can focus on me and my family. My daughters are both doing well. Pups are their usual goofy selves, my husband keeps busy and I have a small, but wonderful group of friends. Its all good.

A few quiet moments. Zippy was spayed and is recovering, but not thrilled with so much crate rest. A few more days and she will be free to bounce around.

I found a beautiful dress for Deb's wedding. I need a few alterations, even found strappy, dye able sandals that are surprisingly comfortable. Thank you Payless Shoes.

I am very excited about becoming part of a local knitting group that meets weekly at Paneras. It will be nice to spend a few hours of precious knitting time with fun, talented and inspiring knitters/crocheters. I've really missed having that local connection with others who share my passion.

Work is busy, despite the claims that retail sales are gloomy. I think the warmer weather is motivating people to get out and shop for spring/summer clothing and gear.

I'm trying to either walk or ride the exercise bike each day. MY WW is faltering a bit, but being active is a good thing.

Time to let Zippy play around... and then head to work. Hope to knit tonight.

Calm and Quiet

Its a calm, quiet day...that is unusal, but I am enjoying it. I haven't blogged in a while. The computer becomes so consuming at times. I like to look through Ravelry for inspiration, but am finding I have no interest in cataloging my stash or books. I try to enter my new projects so I have a handle on what I am doing, but other then that I use it mainly for inspiration.

RP, Stanley and Zippy have settled in. Zippy is about 22 weeks now and still very much in puppy mode, but so cute and fun. Stanley and she get along famously. RP has his moments where he will sit quietly and listen to what she is telling him, but for the most part he still remains in the distance. Poor little guy has degenerative disc problems and doesn't always feel like being an acrobat.

This morning I ran errands and am spending the afternoon knitting on my various projects.

Soon I have to find a dress for Deb's Labor Day wedding. Rejoined WW today to get back on track. So far so good. Being on a diet is no fun, but if I think of it as improving my overall lifestyle I can deal with it. I goof up sometimes, but I'm not beating myself up anymore.

Just an ordinary day

Its a quiet morning, except for puppy antics. Zip has finally worn herself out and is taking a snooze. RP and Stanley are resting in "their spots." Funny how each critter has a place that they call their own.

I'm planning to make Deb a ribbed cardigan. Bought some pretty Debbie Bliss cashmerino dk in a heavenly teal color that I think she will look well in. Now I have a project going for everyone, except Marvin. He is quite happy with his burgundy iiiiiiicyclic cardigan that I made several years ago. Marvin wears it almost everyday during the winter. Nothing like a big cozy sweater.

Not sure what I will do today. Most likely run the usual errands, possibly some housework....wellllll, we'll see about that, definitely knit and then, one of us will go the airport tonight to pick up Rachel. She has spent the weekend with Deb doing wedding stuff and having fun.

Maybe I'll take a walk today and wake up my body. Have to go back to work tomorrow. I admit that doesn't appeal to me, but it will be good to see some of my co workers.

53 years

Today my parents celebrate 53 years of marriage. That is just incredible to me. And, even more unbelievable is that my mom gave birth to me at age 19. They are still happy and have a wonderful relationship. All that time spent together. Amazing stamina, especially after after raising me...a true problem child!

This past month Marvin had major GI surgery and is now recovering. This was the result of a nasty bout of diverticulitis complicated by an intestinal blockage several months ago. Hopefully he will continue to do well.

I took a few weeks off from work to care for Marvin until he is independent enough to mange through out the day. Having three critters is a real challenge even for a healthy person. Zippy is at that adolescent stage where her curiosity quotient is through the roof, her activity level is non-stop and her fascination with running up and down the steps is now a truly aerobic activity! Stanley and RP, being older just watch, fascinated by her.

Rachel is going to NC this weekend to help her sister with her wedding plans. I am hoping to knit Deb something very special. I will have to start soon. She has a late August wedding.

My various knitting projects are keeping me busy when I can sit still for a few minutes. I'm having fun and am really happy with all the different yarns I'm working with. Ravelry.com is also keeping me inspired. I usually knit while I am looking at the site.

Time to find Zippy, Its awful quiet here.

Where has January gone?

Where has January gone? I feel like I am in some sort of time warp. We are trying to get back into a daily routine. Rachel returned from Israel. She had a fabulous time touring the country, met many new friends, snapped over seven hundred photos and rode a camel. School starts this week. Skating continues.

RP, Stanley and Zippy are settling in. There is lots of puppy energy to burn off each day. Zip is now 12 weeks old and lots of fun.

I have a few days off from work which is a welcome change. I've been looking through Ravelry, waiting for my yarn orders to arrive and trying to find some quiet time to get ready to start my projects.

Its finally cold. Not much else to report. Hope to have more news soon.

Resting with the pups

I've had the past two days off and even though we are keeping busy with Zippy, I'm starting to feel a little more rested after the retail holiday frenzy.

No knitting lately,but BrooklynTweed's last post inspired me to spend some birthday money to order from http://www.beaverslide.com - I chose the McTaggart Tweed, I think that is what it is called, in wild currant. I've wanted to knit myself a Pure and Simple V-neck cardigan. This yarn is perfect. I am also going to knit my first Starmore - St. Brigid in charcoal Canadian Regal wool from Schoolhouse Press. I'll have two "me" projects, one simple and one challenging. I'm anxiously waiting for the yarn for both sweaters to arrive.

Rachel is still in Israel with birthright.org I'm missing her so much, but know she is having a wonderful time.

Spectacular Birthday

I had a fabulous birthday and a completely outrageous surprise, courtesy of Rachel. She bought me another puppy! Zippy is my first little girl, a Schnoodle (schnauzer-poodle mix born Oct 18 so as of today she is about nine weeks old. I'm completely in love. Stanley and Zippy are getting along very well. She is feisty, but good natured so far. RP is slowly adjusting, but occasionally lets her know, he is the boss. I have a feeling Zippy may warm RP's heart enough to break down some of his barriers.

There is plenty of love to go around, but I'll have my hands full until Zippy settles in.

Knitting is on the back burner for a while.

Relaxing

Two days off to relax. My older daughter and her fiance are visiting. Deb and Rachel are out looking at weddings gowns. Bill and Marvin are being typical guys..reading the paper. I may visit the yarn shop or book store. We'll probably go to the deli for dinner and discuss wedding plans.

Snow and a nice day off

I had the day off...perfect timing as we had our first few inches of pretty white snow. I slept in, went grocery shopping, met Rachel for lunch, came home and finished my Noro Aurora scarf. The colorway is so pretty. Blacks, grays, magenta, toast and lavender. The colorway makes sense. The sporadic wraps of metallic thread around the fibers added a delicate amount of glitz. I'm happy with the result.

Work is becoming busier and more fun as we approach the holidays.

Rachel is looking forward to the end of her semester and trip to Israel.

Last night the house fragrance was latkes and homemade applesauce...delicious.

Lost a week or two

I feel like I lost a week or two. We had a quiet, but delicious Thanksgiving. Rachel's Austrian friend, Viktor joined us. He is bright, articulate and delightful company. Viktor is a successful, freestyle skater, who previously represented Austria at the last Winter Olympics. Maybe we can convince him to dance with Rachel. They would have a great partnership.

Black Friday was not as busy at Eddie Bauer as we had hoped. Sales are down. I developed a nasty head cold and took a day off to just rest. Too much on my feet and I was wiped out.

On the knitting front, I've been trying to finish up current projects. Spent some time clearing off my desk and getting my dp's in order. I've lurked on Ravelry to see what other knitters are up to. Also, bought some new pattern books by Louisa Hardings and Sarah Dallas. I've been sharing these with Caroline. She is very excited about knitting and actually went to Yarnings by herself. You know you have launched a succesful knitter when they acually go looking for yarn by themselves. I'm so happy Caro is enjoying herself.

Tonight, a potential partner is flying in from San Jose to skate with Rachel for the week. Ben is 24 and has been skating for many years. Lets keep our fingers crossed on this.

Think I'll finish my cleaning, then relax and knit.

Ripping out

I ripped out my Noro sock. While I like the "After Bertha" spiral ribbed pattern, the ribbed fabric is feeling unusually coarse. I'm going to look at some other patterns and see what may be more suitable. Maybe I just need to be patient...working in size 2 needles isn't as much fun as I though t it would be!

Next, I ripped out my chevron scarf. The Saffron Dyeworks yarn is luscious, but I wasn't thrilled with the path of variegated yarn in this pattern.

I think I'll just work on the sleeve of Rachel's v-neck pullover for tonight. Hopefully I'll have enough yarn for the cuffs and v-neck ribbing.

Fabulous Friday

Friday was a really fun and relaxing day. Caroline and I enjoyed our trip to Yarnings. This was her first visit to the shop and she was completely mesmerized. We were on a mission to find yarn for her scarf and I bought an Ella Rae book. Next, we went to lunch in Skippack Village at a place called, "Grandmas." Delicious food, cozy environment and good conversation. I was sorry to see the day end. We are both looking forward to doing this again real soon.

Feeling inspired

Chilly weather always inspires me to knit, especially with natural fibers. I just love the feel of wool, alpaca and mohair. I finished a rolled edge hat using some gorgeous Noro yarn, almost have a sleeve done on Rachel's top down sweater, am just about finished with the first Noro sock ribbing and ripped back to correct a mistake on the Victorian Shoulderette...forgot a YO. Today, I received two new books..."The Knitters Book of Yarn" and "Scottish Highland Knits."

The highlight of my week was teaching my favorite co worker to knit. This coming Friday, we both have the day off and plan to go out to lunch and visit Yarnings in Skippack, PA. We'll definitely get into some mischief.

Lazy Day

I have a day off and plan to be lazy except for taking Stanley to the vet to have his stitches removed. Then, home to be a knitting couch potato. I almost have the ribbing done on my Noro sock and made more progress on Rachel's shoulderette. I also have my eye on a ChicKnits pattern called CECE.

Today is also day six of Weight Watchers. So far so good. I have to start exercising to really make this work. That will take some effort especially after working in a retail environment all day.

Well I should get my day going.

Almost back to normal

The people part of my life has calmed to some degree. Now, its Stanley's turn to have some minor surgery and a dental cleaning. He and I were at the vet before 7AM this morning. Hopefully his recovery will go smoothly.

I'm finally back in the mood to knit. The rainy Saturday brought us some cool, crisp, autumn weather. I visited Yarnings in Skippack, PA after seeing their advertisement for Noro Kureyon Sock yarn. Bought one skein and happily returned to my knitting room where I spent most of my weekend. I now have a spiral, ribbed tube sock started using size 2 needles. "After Bertha," is the perfect pattern for me to get back the feel of knitting with toothpicks and also a great way to see how the colors...greens, blues, blacks, pinks, and golds swirl through the sock. I promise to make its mate! While I was working on the sock, I kept staring at my yarn stash and spotted a skein of gorgeous, teal colored, baby alpaca purchased a few years ago at a TNNA show. That is now in the process of becoming a "Victorian Shoulderette" for Rachel. At some point I will learn how to use the digital camera to take photos.

I'm slowly getting familiar with using Ravelry and am tracking my new projects there. Both my yarn stash and knitting library are so extensive, that it will take a lifetime to enter everything. I may just pass on that. I'm wondering if other knitters feel that way.

Guess I'll go back to my knitting before I leave for work.

In a funk

Rachel had a fun party with her friends this past weekend. She made four trays of delicious stuffed shells and two yummy birthday cakes. It was nice to see her enjoying herself.

I returned to work last week, but have cut back on hours. Between Marvin's medical stuff and my achy legs, its a good thing, But, my schedule is erratic, so that makes for some weirdness. I'm knitting in my spare time trying to complete WIPS. Also, keeping a watchful eye on Marvin. He doesn't like that, but as far as I'm concerned he doesn't have choice. I'm in a bit of a funk and wish I could muster up some motivation to get back to healthy eating and exercise. Where has my self-discipline gone?

Rachel's trip to Israel was confirmed. She leaves Dec 30 and returns Jan 10. Karen, her best friend in the whole wide world, is studying in Jerusaleum. Hopefully they can connect, but Rachel knows safety is paramount. We will not permit her to leave the security of the tour group.

I guess I should get ready for work. Tonight I'll continue knitting the sleeve of a top down, V-neck pullover for Rachel when I get home.

18 years old

Where did the time go? Rachel is 18 years old today. I vividly remember her just becoming 2 years old. I love her so much. We spent the weekend just being together. It was nice and relaxing. We splurged and bought her the perfect COACH bag and some earrings. This morning I baked a yellow cake with Rachel's favorite chocolate icing.

As for knitting, I did buy two skeins of gorgeous llama soft yarn in Rachel's favorite blue color...now to decide on something to make for her, or convince her to let me buy enough for a sweater.

What to do

Well, I started to get familiar with Ravelry which is an amazing site. I began to enter my stash info and realized this would take weeks. I still haven't figured out how to use the digital camera to photograph what I have. Then, I clicked on books and wound up at the Library thing. OY, I am a bit overwhelmed. I'm sure getting all this organized will be well worth it, but honestly, I have to ask myself if I want to get that nuts about my knitting life?

So, while thinking this over, I started and completed a rolled edge hat for an almost 2 year old. I used Berrocco Hip Hop in a bright, primary colors from my stash. This time spent was more much productive.

I'm going to marinate on this for a while, but will play on the site more to see what else it offers.

Life Upside Down

Its been a very long time since I blogged. Life gets so busy. I'm approaching my one year anniversary of returning to work after active momhood. Over the past few months, my hours and responsibilities have increased. Its still fun. I've continued with my knitting and finished various projects. Spent a few weekends organzing my knitting room and reducing my magazine stash. Yarn stash is still plentiful.

My daughter, Rachel and her partner/coach, CG, had fabulous presentation and results at the recent 2007 Lake Placid Ice Dance Championships placing 4th/12th in the senior level compulsory dance event. We are hopeful that CG will decide to have a competitive season with Rachel.

Our summer was plagued with numerous health issues resulting in a tonsillectomy for Rachel and a nasty, first bout of diverticultis with complications for my husband. We are still trying to get right side up after all of those adventures.

I've been invited to join Ravelry and look forward to this. My computer skills are still not that great, so my abiltiy to get real fancy with my blog and photos may take a while.

Bittersweet

Well, Spokane was bittersweet. Rachel had a fabulous experience skating at Nationals and enjoyed spending time with her competitors and friends. Then, Kevin ended their partnership. It shocked and devastated Rachel and everyone else. What a lame thing to do. He hurt her so terribly and snubbed everyone else who put so much effort into their partnership. The ice dance community was very excited about their potential and development as a team. I have absolutely no respect for him or his family. We thought this man had some decent upbringing...turns out he is one big irresponsible, excuse waiting to pounce on someone else. I truly hope he does not continue skating as he will no doubt hurt his next partner. It makes me sick.

Rachel is determined to continue skating and is searching for a new partner.

Hope I have better news next time.

Life is Good

WOW...its been a while since I have blogged. Life has been busy. Work is going extremely well. My colleagues are great people. Each of us get along, have fun and work hard.

Biggest news is that on Jan 19, we leave for 2007 State Farm Figure Skating Championships. This is a huge deal! Rachel and Kevin look fabulous for a first year team. Our hope is that they both have a wonderful competitive experience and a good time with their friends.

I have been knittng even though I have less down time. Mostly finishing up projects, perusing through some of the newly published books and magazines.

Pups are still goofy. Stanley has GI troubles and RP's little brain is still off.

Well I should get ready for work. Hope to be better at blogging after we return from Spokane, WA.

Going strong

Starting week three and still having a good time. I come home the good kind of tired. Family life is better too. We all arrive home around the same time, actually sit around, have dinner and talk about our day.

Rachel recently had her 17th birthday. She celebrated with her friends and received beautiful gifts. Its been a good year. Kevin, her skating partner, has brought her tremendous happiness.

Yesterday the weather was perfect for sitting on the deck and knitting. Rachel started a pair of wristlets using hunter green heathered, chunky, alpaca. I'm on the sleeves of her birthday sweater.

Well, off to get my day going. Have to drop some clothes to Good Will

Work is Fun

Lots to learn about the clothing line, transactions, stocking etc. The people I work with are really nice too. Most have poodles and children and are still training their husbands! I do come home tired and my feet are sore but I'm sure after a few days I will adjust. I will be experimenting to find out what are the most comfortable shoes to wear. I have not knit a stitch and will eventually figure out how to balance my day. Working has already helped my sanity!

My new job starts today. I'm a little nervous. Its been almost 17 years since I held a job. I hope I do well. Rachel gave me a refresher course on applying make up and helped me figure out what to wear. That is the tough part..I am a bit chubbier then I was so many years ago and have no fashion sense. I am going to be a challenge!

I am done with the back of Rachel's sweater and have started the front neckline shaping. So far so good. Just two sleeves to go.

OK, I'm off to transform myself into a working woman!

I am making progress on Rachel's sweater. Back is done, front is underway. Garter stitch can be boring, but a switch to addi turbo needles makes the process easier. Gedifra Akona is nice yarn to work with.

Still a few more punchlist items on the house.

Feels like Fall is in the air. I am ready for that.

No word about the job yet. If I hear nothing by the end of the week, I'll look for something else.

On a Mission

I'm working on a birthday present for Rachel, but can't divulge details yet. This is always a risk because she is very sharp when it comes to fashion and style. Hopefully I will get this job and that will help my dilemma of "What Not to Wear."

Its going to start raining sometime today and linger through tomorrow. I've been thoroughly cleaning all the bookshelves. Tossing old stuff, dusting and trying to get some control of the house.

I picked up the new IK Crochet issue and KnitScene, but haven't had a chance to really look through them.

Back to the birthday present.

Somber day

It doesn't seem like its been five years already. 911 feels so recent. The date will always have a powerful tug and an inexplainable emptiness. We have friends who were close by the towers on that fateful day, who survived. Thank God.

My husband is actually in NYC today. Rachel went to classes and is now at the rink. No one will be home until at least 9PM tonight. I'm home cleaning, but its quiet as it should be on this day.

MEDALS!!!!

Yesterday was a spectacular day. Rachel and Kevin won bronze medal in compulsory dances, The Starlight Waltz and Midnight Blues. And THEN, they wowed the field with a fabulous Original Dance to a tango from Vanessa Mae's Choreography CD and won their first GOLD MEDAL as a team. They have worked so hard since their return from Lake Placid... trying to understand and apply the requirements for the new judging system. Its a work in process. But for the next day we are enjoying this feeling. Then they are back to work to make things even better!

Maybe I'll knit today!

Gloom

The weather is plain weird. Mostly rainy and gray, except for Sunday which was a beautiful, sunny day with comfortable temperatures. Today its back to gloom.

The little red vest is done except for the neck, arm bands and side seams. Quite cute. Have to see what to tackle next.

Rachel started classes today and then goes directly to the rink. At least she let me pack up some lunch for her and Kevin.
They have to figure out their fall schedules so they can juggle, school, skating, off-ice and work. Busy two kids.

The handyman came to put the blinds back up. Just a few more items to go on the list. Then, the gardener can tidy up the landscaping.

Time for more coffee.

Amazing, but the punch list stuff is getting done..especially the gutters and caulking which is kind of necessary with the remnants of Ernesto expected to arrive this weekend.

I lucked out and found a nice outfit for the Bar Mitzvah at Chico's. That saves me from sewing. I wasn't really in the mood.

Tonight I plan to cast on for the little kid's red vest and look through the new issue of "Knit It." The rest of me is in limbo.

Flat

Klaralund sleeves are sewn together. I have to attach them to the body of the sweater. Rachel is on the ice forever, so I may just try it myself.

Back Lopi tote felted beautifully. It is the perfect shape, size and texture.

I started a cute little Yankee Knitter child's, sleeveless vest using some Schaefer, bright red, yummy, aran weight alpaca. The back is done and I have to cast on for the front. Lately I've been watching some old spy movies that are perfect for mindless knitting.

The house stuff is dragging because the weather has not been cooperating. Its been,muggy, stormy and plain yucky.

I have not done any sewing yet but ordered a nice dress and hopefully it will be OK for the Bar Mitzvah. My diet has its ups and downs.

Overall, I am making knitting progress, and just in one of those flat moods. This post is too boring to continue. Bye for now.

Felting

Today is another day of waiting around for a contractor to appear. I just tossed the black lopi tote into the wash for felting. I have to finish seaming the Klaralund sleeves and then will need help with placing them properly on the body of the sweater. The shoulders flow into the V-neck. Clever construction, but I'm feeling spatially challenged. Rachel to the rescue.

Soon I have to start sewing the dress for the Bar Mitzvah. Hopefully my knitting motivation will spill over into my sewing life!

I have to fess up. I snitched a little PB last night. At least it was natural with no preservatives. Its so hard to change behaviors!
Maybe I should decide on a project that I pick up to work on when I get the urge to eat the wrong foods. Sabotaging myself is not a good thing. I'm going to give this some thought.

Elf Cap

I did return to Weight Watchers...one and a half days in. So far so good. Every minute that passes without snitching the Skippy is a good thing. Having the water bottle within reach is helping, as is aerobic gum chewing.

Last night I continued sewing together Klaralund and then scooted to Borders and bought "Simple Chic" by Jil Eaton. There are lots of cute, quick knits. In fact, I just finished the 'Elf Cap" using some purple Gedifra Donatella. Its adorable and took exactly one skein of the yarn using size 13 needles. Good use for stash yarn.

Back to the Black Lopi Tote and a cup of blueberry coffee, with non-fat H&H!

Assembly of the Noros

I did it! Rachel showed me her seaming technique and I completed the "Tista" sweater. She delivered it this morning to Eva's daddy who is also Rachel's coach. He absolutely loved it and could not wait to bring it home. It felt so good to finally complete a garment and have it so well received. My motivation is back. Tonight I've been sewing together my "Klaralund." I am a Noro fanatic.

The pups finally had a good time running around in the backyard. They've been restricted due to all the construction debris in the yard, as well as the horrible heat. They rediscovered all their favorite spots and smelled so good from sunshine and grass.

Tomorrow I hope to do some sewing, run a few errands and maybe consider officially rejoining WW.

Knitting progress

I actually finished knitting a baby sweater yesterday. Rachel offered to sew it together, or at least show me her technique. The "Tista" pattern is from a recent Noro book. I used Noro Blossom and Kureyon in combination. The colors are not typically used for a little person - beiges, browns, oranges, purples and specks of green, but this little girl is one classy child and her parents are very fashion savvy.

I also have a black Lopi tote going that will need to be felted. I comp'eted a Noro Kureyon, "Klaralund" sweater for myself in a pretty, vibrant blue colorway. Again, I need Rachel's assembly assistance.

Off to an afternoon barbecue.

At Peace

Frank is at peace. His funeral was a wonderful celebration of his life. The day was glorious. The church was comfy, family and true friends paid tribute to a beautiful man. He was laid to rest in the church cemetary. Frank is less then a mile from his home so we can easily go visit him anytime....especially when we all need some fixing!

I'm in the mood to knit again.

How do I adjust to a world without Frank? How does anybody? He passed away last night about 10PM. Frank gave that damn melanoma a brutal fight. Frank has never been weak. I just hope he did not hurt. That would be too unbearable. I'm so glad Stanley my white poodle pup was there for me to cuddle with. Animals know just the right thing to do. Stanley met Frank a few months ago and the two hit it off. This man was so absolutely wonderful in every way. Frank's family too...just amazing people. He really isn't gone and will always be in my heart.

Tough Week

Its been a chaotic, worrisome week. Finishing up the house repairs is always a pain. Everyone is on edge and wants to be done. One of the pups became ill with a severe GI bug which required two nights at the vet. Rachel is flying home from NC tomorrow. Hopefully that will not be too nuts for her. Frank is being kept comfortable.

This world needs to return to a simpler, less chaotic life with no gadgets..except of course knitting needles.

It can't be happening

Frank went into hospice yesterday. They found more brain mets, no doubt the melanoma spreading rapidly. I can't pretend its not happening, it is. We all privately knew it would. Its too difficult to fathom. But, I have no choice. Frank will not turn the corner and come home now. I don't want him to hurt.

Back from Lake Placid. This competition in reality is definitely not a "championship event". It should be called a "Season Opener Critique," for all the teams planning to enter the qualifying events that could determine if they go to US Nationals in January. Judging is inconsistent, not all the teams compete at all the events, the new system is still in its infancy and rule changes are slapped on about 45 seconds before the teams skate. There are always emotional highs and lows and its awfully expensive to be put through this ringer. Despite it all, LP is a ritual and considered a requirement in the sport of ice dance...well I think its a sport??

Rachel went to NC for a change of scenery. Kevin is around, sort of...maybe skating, maybe going to visit his friend in MD. They both needed a break from skating and each other.

I went to Adirondack Yarns in LP. Saw Susan and marveled at how beautiful her shop is. A few of the moms and grandmoms frequented the shop during competition down time. I bought the Berrocco tank pattern that Rachel wanted.

Today Main Skein is hosting a charity knit out. I may go. It might be good for me.

The road back

My friend Frank is out of ICU and making progress. I admit I was petrified about seeing him, but once I was by his bedside, he knew I was there and squeezed my hand with incredible strength...my fears subsided. Recovery will be slow and tedious, but Frank is in charge now and he will find his way back.

The mud pie is taking shape. Painters have been in and out touching up window moldings and repairing damage to drywall.
The pups are worn out because their activities have been restricted.

Rachel and Kevin returned from a fun time and successful exhibition in CA. Kevin's mom arrives tonight. They have a warm-up competition tomorrow, then we pack up this weekend and leave for Lake Placid International Ice Dance Championships on Aug 1.

Lots to do. Thoughts of Frank will carry us through. He is amazing.

I have a few days to think about a knitting/crochet project to take with me. Be back in touch when we return.

Detour and Mudpies

Had an unexpected, heart breaking detour. My dear friend who is aggressively fighting melanoma and Parkinson's Disease suffered a stroke the other day that required emergency brain surgery. We spent the day with him and his family. This sweet man is hanging in there, making baby steps toward progress. Its too unbelievable. I love my friend so much. I want him here forever.

The house looks like a huge mud pie as they apply the different layers of stucco. Can't wait until this is over.

I haven't knit a stitch.

I just splurged a little. I need to learn how to do the photos but that means I need to learn to use the other computers. Lately, I'm too brain dead for that. The show was small, but nice. Knitting still overpowers crochet. Lots of local vendors with handspun.

Here's my list:
Habu textiles www.habutextiles.com - 1494 yards of jet black super fine merino wool. Its on a cone, like a thread. I must have been nuts. Its screaming, " I want to be lace." Very scary!

Dzined "Onesies" 1 oz of wool/hemp blend in a variegated mauve, gold, green, denim blue...just to play. Also, 300 yds of Irish Linen in a mauve. I can probably get a nice lace scarf out of it. The owner was nice. Accountant by day, mom, knitter, spinner, dyer by night.

Skaska Designs..the Russian Orenburg Shawl place. My favorite stop. 1 skein of laceweight silk/yak in a gorgeous, shimmery
gray. 1675 yds with a pattern for an Orenburg Lace Triangle by Galina A. Khmeleva. I bumped into her in the ladies room..she is incredible. I definitely want to take a future class with Galina to take the fear out of my lace knitting.

Rachel bought some Schaefer Yarn from Adirondack Yarns, the shop from Lake Placid. We'll see Susan in a
few weeks when we are there for the competition. 100% pima cotton in the Shari Lewis colorway..purple, blue,
pink,orange, golden yellow, lime green for a textured tank top. Very colorful, very Rachel.

A pattern for a Persian Lamb Jacket using heavy mohair boucle. www.knowareland.com I didn't buy the mohair,
but the pattern is a simple, top down and would make a nice, warm, flumpfy jacket at a guage of 2.5 sts/inch. I've got lots of stash for that.

Also liked www.BWBA.com Buckwheat Bridge Angoras, but did not splurge.

So, today I will stare at my stuff, wind the skeins and look through some lace books. I do that
alot...look. Maybe I should actually considering doing!

Let's just say its been a week of ups and downs. House stuff, costume crazies and sewing has inspired me to return to knitting. I'm going to disappear for part of the day and wander aimlessly at the Knit and Crochet Show Market.

noisey Sunday

Its a not a typical, quiet Sunday morning. The workers are taking more windows out. The pups are safe at the kennel. Keeping them out of mischeif was exhausting.

Rachel came down with a fever, sore throat and GI upset. She's better today, but may need a check-up on Monday.

I started some sewing, but am a little rusty with the techniques. So far I have a skirt going and plan to cut out a pants pattern. Also have Kevin's boot covers ready to sew...but after I practice a little more.

No desire to knit lately. Off to sew.

We are deep into this house project. The weather has been ideal so they guys are making lots of progress. The next few days they will be working inside taking windows out, replacing flashing and reinstalling the windows correctly. The pups are completely out of wack. I keep cleaning out closets and tossing stuff.

Rachel and Kevin are working hard. Costume stuff is getting hairy. The kids will head to CA soon for a few days for a much needed change of scenery, skating in an exhibition and to celebrate Kevin's 21st birthday!

Knitting??? Crochet???? How about some sewing?. That's on my agenda. My weight loss is not happening, so I need to make some simple, comfy dresses for Lake Placid...that fit!

Back up

The chimney is going back up, block by block. Seems the dreaded noise is over for now...until the next stage of this project gets underway. The weather has been cooperating.

My brain still feels like a bouncing ball. Can't settle down to decide on a project. Last night I walked into my knitting room, looked at two wicker baskets brimming with brightly, colored, assorted, scrap yarns and started to crochet a ripple afghan. Rachel was baking muffins when I came downstairs with my project and quickly decided this would be fun for her to do!! That's OK. Maybe I'll start another one, but in a knitted pattern. There is certainly enough yarn to go around!

Well, time to get moving.

The chimney is coming down, block by block. The jack hammer noise is annoying. Almost like being inside an MRI tube. Pups are tolerating it fairly well. They burrow under blankets and amazingly, they sleep. I am not having the easiest time concentrating, so I've been folding laundry, looking through magazines and trying to just get through it. A few more days of noise and then onto the next stage of the project.

Finally! Sky is cloudy, but there are breaks of blue. Hopefully we will get a reprieve and the soggy ground will dry out. Maybe they can resume the house stuff. Yesterday I did cast on and purled the first row for the Brea bag before Stanley interrupted me.

OD and FD costumes have arrived from Russia. They are magnificent and fit the kids well. Everyone is pleased. CD dresses are just about done too. I've been doing inventory and organizing my Swavorski stone stash to be sure I have replacements. Russian glue is usally like concrete, but with all the gyrations and lifts, stones do pop off. I also plan to sew boot covers for Kevin's CD outfits. Looks pretty simple, but we'll see.

I ordered a pattern for a ribbed corset from Mode Knits. Looks challenging, but if I can do it, Rachel will look fabulous in it.

Think I'll check the garden to see how well the weeds have done!

Gray blurs

Rain, wind, rain, wind. That's the extent of it. The days are becoming gray blurs. I feel very soggy. Pups just sleep. No work is getting done on the house. Yesterday I cooked, went through my clothes and collected three hefty bags for Goodwill. I haven't watched TV at all. I should really ride the exercise bike. OY..where should I throw myself? OK, enough nonsense babble. I'm going to cast on for the back of the Brea bag. Gee, didn't I say I was going to do that yesterday???

The rain has been relentless. Perfect for being a knitting/crocheting duck. Yesterday I got sidetracked and started to crochet a bag using the mohair I planned to exchange at Yarnings. Well, I thought it would felt up nicely, but the result was disappointing. It looks like a torpedo cover! I'll find something to use it for. There was one skein left that I swapped for some Rowan Kid Silk Night in a creamy ivory. Today I'll cast on for the front of the Brea Bag and think about what to do with the Rowan yarn.

Good knitting weather

The weather has been horrendous. Perfect for knitting, but not great for the house construction. I wound up at The Main Skein in Ambler. Marie has a beautiful assortment of all types of yarns. The atmosphere is cozy too. I bought some Araucania Nature Wool in a cavern color to try another bag for Rachel. Also went through my stash and found some bright red Cascade wool. I have one side done of the Brea Bag from the Berrocco free pattern section. Rachel likes it. Today I hope to finish the front. Still have to head to Yarnings to swap my mohair.

OK, now to cast on for the Brea Bag.

Getting a break

Its a dismal, rainy Saturday morning. Looks like we get a break from the construction. The house stucco has been stripped away. So far the inspection reports accurately detected the problem areas. The crew has been very good. Not one lazy person and the place is cleaned up nicely at the end of the day. I've been cooped up here by choice. The pups are tolerating the process well, but both came home stressed out and with some GI upsets. Nothing a little pepcid and flagyl won't cure!

I crocheted a small digital camera sac for Rachel to slip her new camera in. Dug into my stash and found some Classic Elite Mayan alpaca, or was it llama, in a vibrant purple and turquoise and purple soft, nubby, novelty yarn to fashion a flap. Its cute. Rachel likes it. Took about an hour to work up.

Not sure what I'll do today. Maybe head over to Yarnings and see about swapping two unused skeins of Wool in the Woods mohair for a different colorway. Rachel and her dad may take a drive in her new car to NJ to visit her grandparents. Good distraction from an intense week of skating.

I'm really blowing my WW program. Not proud of it either.

So far the back of the house is down to the plywood.
Water damage is what we expected and a new
discovery...framing that holds the sunroom together
and where the the family room ballons away from from
kitchen area, is separating. There are huge gaps which
is obviously causing chronic drywall cracks. They are
working their way around to the front and a big
question is what they will discover under the
stonework covering the garage area. The front outside
entrance and archway area has to be replaced. Entire
chimney is coming down. Back windows will be removed
next week, flashing installed and the alarm rewired.
The workers are nice, respectful, neat and clean up
everything. Isn't this fun?? We are not shocked by
anything! While the process is a magillah, having a
good cast of characters really eases the stress.

Rachel is driving herself to the rink. First week skating at the
crack of fog is exhausting for all the kids. I will
go later to watch and help out with a costume fitting.

Yesterday I reorganized my knitting room and have more
yarn for seven lifetimes. I am going to try really
hard to use what I have. Last night I knit up a quick bag using turquoise mohair.
Have to make the strap and then I'll felt it.

I'll pick the boys up today. Hopefully RP's
pancreatitis has calmed down and will not become a
chronic problem. Stanley is with him so that should
help.
